Tasmanian Success At Melbourne Queer Film Festival

Big news from the Melbourne Queer Film Festival with two of Director / Producer team Rebecca Thomson and Rogan Brown's films picking up awards this week. Both of the winning films were made with the support of Wide Angle Tasmania

Slashed is a 2010 Raw Nerve film, a national production initiative to provide uncredited filmmakers with the opportunity to produce a high quality short film on a micro-budget. It screened at Sydney's Mardi Gras Film Festival in February where it was selected to be one of seven short films in the My Queer Career Competition and recently at Melbourne's Queer Film Fest.

"We did not win first prize which went to a film which had a budget of $150 000 as compared to our budget of $4000, but apparently the judges vote was so close that they decided to award us a Special Commendation," says director Rebecca Thomson.

But the team has won two other awards at the festival;

  • Best Australian Short Film ($1000): Slashed
  • Best Short Film ($500): Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical

Judge Tom Ballard said about Slashed “It’s great to see some queer cinema prepared to not take itself too seriously. The camp heroes and sci fi fantasy are often inspiring role models for people who feel different, including those of us in the gay community, and it’s used as great material in this clever and funny little film.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in both films from all of us at Screen Tasmania
