Screen Tasmania

Training and Placements

Screen Tasmania is committed to growing the skills of local practitioners.

Through its Industry Development training program, there are three types of on-the-job paid opportunities available across professional productions.

Productions wanting to film in Tasmania with support from the Production Support Program will be encouraged to employ one or more of the following opportunities:

  1. Attachments
  2. Placements
  3. Traineeships

Positions can be in linear scripted and unscripted / documentary productions such as film, television, online or in games development.

The opportunities can be in either ‘above’ or ‘below’ the line roles, although preference will be given to positions that are identified to be in critical shortage in the industry. Above the Line roles or ‘key creatives’ refers to the personnel responsible for the creative shape of the project such as producers, writers, and directors; in games development, it refers to leads in the areas of production, design, art and programming.

The technicians and crew who make the show are considered Below the Line.

To register your interest in these career opportunities, please submit your details on Screen Tasmania’s Training Register.

Attachments

An Attachment – is designed for entry level practitioners who are new to the screen industry or have had minimal experience on a professional set.

Attachments will be given the opportunity to work within a chosen department for a minimum of 8 weeks or the equivalent to 1 shooting block (depending on the shooting schedule of the production) with the time frame to be agreed to by Screen Tasmania. The Attachment will be paid the minimum award for a 50-hour week per the production’s agreement. Both attachment and Head of Department (or Supervisor) will sign a Learning Contract outlining the duties and expectations of the role ahead.

Screen Tasmania will provide funds to the production company to pay for the wages of the attachment so that they are covered by the production companies’ insurance. It is expected the attachment will be treated as any other employee of the production company with all loadings, accommodation, travel, and per-diems being provided where required.

Once the attachment has finished, an Acquittal Report will need to be completed by the attachment and production company. Failure to lodge the Acquittal Report will mean the attachment will be ineligible for any future Screen Tasmania funding until it is lodged.

Productions applying for Production Support must be genuinely willing and able to train attachments on-the-job in a way that encourages continued employment.

Examples of attachments include (but are not limited to):

  • Someone who has just graduated from university or is currently at TAFE and wishes to gain on-set experience.
  • Someone who has transferrable skills from another industry (e.g. someone with theatre set design experience to work in art department)
  • Someone who has self-produced online content and is wanting to make a full-time career in linear production.

Placements

A Placement – is designed for emerging practitioners who have worked in the industry and want to elevate their skills. These practitioners are expected to have gained at least one credit in their career and have a clear idea of what department or area they are wanting to pursue. In exceptional circumstances, Screen Tasmania will consider people with transferrable skills from another industry who have displayed some knowledge proficiency in screen. For example, an accountant interested in becoming a production manager or production accountant.

All placement positions should be considered supernumerary to the production crew and be afforded the opportunity to perform the role in which they are employed with the guidance of an experienced practitioner also working in that role (or adjacently – e.g a production coordinator and assistant production coordinator).

Placements will be given the opportunity to work in their chosen department for a minimum of 12 weeks or the equivalent to 1 shooting block (depending on the shooting schedule of the production) with the time frame to be approved by Screen Tasmania. The Placement will be paid above the minimum wage at what is a reasonable ‘liveable’ wage for a 50-hour week. Both placement and Head of Department (or Supervisor) will sign a Learning Contract outlining the duties and expectations of the role.

Screen Tasmania will provide funds to the production company to pay the wages of the placement so that the candidate is covered by the production companies’ insurance. It is expected the placement will be treated as any other an employee of the production with all loadings, accommodation, travel, and per-diems being provided where required.

Once the placement period is finished, an Acquittal Report will need to be completed by the placement and production company. Failure to lodge the Acquittal Report will mean the placement will be ineligible for any future Screen Tasmania funding until it is lodged.

Productions applying for Production Support must be genuinely willing and able to train placements on-the-job in a way that encourages continued employment.

Productions applying for Production Support must be genuinely willing and able to train attachments on-the-job in a way that encourages continued employment.

Examples of placements include (but are not limited to):

  • Someone who has credits but is yet to elevate as a professional in their desired role.
  • Someone who has completed a previous attachment and is ready to take a step up.
  • Someone who has notable transferrable skills from another industry (e.g. Commercials cinematographer yet to work on a scripted set).

Traineeships

A Traineeship – is designed for intensive coaching between a designated trainer and trainee in a specific role on production. Roles chosen for Traineeships must be in critical shortage within the local industry and approved by Screen Tasmania. The trainee can be either be entry level or emerging.

Unlike attachments and placements, Screen Tasmania will fund the wages of the trainer while the trainee will be paid directly by the production so that the candidate is covered by the companies’ insurance. It is expected that a Tasmanian practitioner is engaged by production in a role they are stepping up to or might have done before on a smaller scale and are employed accordingly. Screen Tasmania can provide funding for an experienced practitioner to be employed to train the practitioner for a negotiated period (this is typically a minimum of 2 weeks).

It is expected the trainee will be treated as any other employee of production with all loadings, accommodation, travel, and per-diems being provided where required.

Trainees will be given the opportunity to work in their chosen department for a minimum of 12 weeks or the equivalent to 1 shooting block (depending on the shooting schedule of the production) with the time frame to be approved by Screen Tasmania. The trainee will be paid above the minimum wage and what is considered to be a reasonable ‘liveable’ salary for a 50-hour week. Both trainer and trainee will sign a Learning Contract outlining the duties and expectations of the role ahead.

Once the traineeship has finished, an Acquittal Report will need to be completed by the trainee, trainer, and production company. Failure to lodge the Acquittal Report will mean the trainee will be ineligible for any future Screen Tasmania funding until it is lodged.

Interstate Positions

Interstate Attachments, Placements and Traineeships are available to Tasmanian practitioners. These opportunities must be in roles that cannot be currently filled in Tasmania and directly address the crew shortages within the local industry. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis with the Industry Development team. Screen Tasmania can assist in covering accommodation costs for successful applicants who are living regionally or away from the production office.
