SBS Documentary Presentation

On Thursday, 24 May 2012 between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm, John Godfrey and Joseph Maxwell, Commissioning Editors for SBS Documentary, will be in Hobart to provide an information session on the current state of play at SBS as well as what they are looking for in 2012-13 and beyond. The presentation wll be held in the 4th Floor Training Room, next to Screen Tasmania, 22 Elizabeth Street, Hobart.

Please note: because the presentation is being held after office hours, all practitioners wanting to attend MUST register with and check in on the night with Reception on the first floor.

All practitoners interested in documentary are encouraged to attend especially in light of the recent federal budget which provided SBS with a much needed funding boost of $158.1m over the next five years. This means that SBS has more funds to invest in independently produced content, especially that which reflects our regional and cultural diversity.

SBS Documentary commissions documentary features or series focussing mainly on science, history and indigenous themes, factual projects dealing with topical social issues and innovative forms of documentary. For more information on SBS Commissioning and the types of content they are looking for, please refer to the SBS Mission Statement.

The career biographies for Mr Godfrey and Mr Maxwell are provided below.

John Godfrey, Senior Commissioning Editor, SBS Documentary

John worked for 10 years in the UK as both a series and executive producer of a range of factual programming for Channel 4 and BBC2. His career in the UK included working on the ground-breaking Channel 4 series Eurotrash, as well as Passengers and Fortean TV. He has been in Australia for nine years, working on documentary and popular culture series for broadcasters such as SBS and Discovery. he has been a Commissioning Editor for SBS Documentary since 2008 and was appointed Senior Commissioning Editor this year. He is now responsible for the entire SBS Documentary slate. John particularly concentrates on contemporary and indigenous documentaries including Once upon a Time in Cabramatta and the upcoming second series of Go Back to Where You Came From.

 Joseph Maxwell, Commissioning Editor, SBS Documentary

Joseph has developed, directed and produced high end primetime documentaries for most of the major broadcasters in Britain and America, working for many of Britain's leading production companies such as Diverse, RDF and IWC. He also set up and ran his own production company, securing international co-productions. Joseph's credits include 9/11 The Firemen's Story and Bomber Crew for Channel 4, and for the BBC, Tribal Wives, Around the World in 90 Minutes and The Protestant Revolution.  He started as Commissioning Editor, SBS Documentary, in January this year.


SBS Consultations : Expression of Interest registration

On Friday, 25 May 2012, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, there will be a limited number of one-on-one consultations for Tasmanian film makers wishing to discuss their documentary or factual projects with the SBS commissioning editors.  These consultations will take place in Screen Tasmania's screening room, Level 4, 22 Elizabeth Street, Hobart.

Before applying for one of these meetings, please read the SBS Mission Statement and consider the broadcaster's general charter together with its specific areas of interest in documentary. Only projects which meet SBS's requirments will be considered.

To apply for a consultation place, please complete the Expression of Interest Registration form and email it to Evan Maloney by COB Tuesday, 22 May 2012.

Evan Maloney, Screen Tasmania's Development Manager, will contact you by Thursday, 24 May, to advise if you have been successful or not and, if successful, what time slot you have been allocated.
