SNAPSHOTNEWS APPLICATIONS CLOSING SOON: Screen Australia calling for Script Factory applicants FINAL WEEK OF PRODUCTION: Arctic Blast feature film heading into third and final week of shooting University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music presents 2009 Broadway to Australia Festival OPPORTUNITIES CALL FOR ENTRIES APPLICATIONS CLOSING SOON: Screen Australia calls for Script Factory Applicants Deadline: Thursday 10 September 2009 Screen Australia is calling for applications for its Script Factory Script Developer initiative, a workshop aimed at up-skilling the standard of Australian development practice by providing high-quality training in script analysis and development. 21 practitioners from around Australia will be selected to attend three-day workshops in late October 2009, using the internationally successful Script Factory model. In business since 1996, the Script Factory has become one of Europe’s leading script development organisations developing new screenwriting talent and supporting the people who work with screenwriters and screenplay material. The inaugural Australian workshops are designed to enable practitioners with high level story-analysis skills to focus on the nuts and bolts of script development. The hands-on workshops will hone participants’ script reading and analysis skills in order to ascertain strengths and weaknesses of a screenplay. The tailored, practical program aims to strengthen and advance Australia’s screenwriting culture and support the development of creative Australian storytelling which engages with audiences. Applications are invited from practitioners who work in script development and who will benefit from a structured course in story theory and working practice in order to build their confidence and resources when preparing script reports and working with writers. Arctic Blast moves into final week of filming Employing over 30 Tasmanian crew, providing nine attachment opportunities and with the majority of cast coming from Tasmania, Arctic Blast has been filming in and around Hobart for the past two weeks, with production due to finish this week. The script has been written especially for Hobart, with lots of well-known local landmarks being used throughout the film. Cast and crew have been working hard to complete the shoot on-schedule, and with Michael Shanks of Stargate - SG1 fame as lead actor the film has resulted in international media coverage for Tasmania. Screen Tasmania sends out congratulations to Executive Producers Antony I. Ginnane, Pierre David, Tom Berry and Ann Lyons and Producers Gina Black and Stefan Wodoslawsky, as well as the cast and crew for their work on the production and we look forward to seeing the completed project. University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music Proudly Presents the 2009 Broadway to Australia Festival TONIGHT:After the Storm (2009): a film by Hilla Medalia WORLD-PREMIERE GENERAL PUBLIC SCREENING The premiere screening will be followed by a 30-minute Question & Answer session led by Michael A. Kerker, Director of Musical Theatre for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) who will interview Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty about their experience of After the Storm. After the Storm is a feature length documentary film that follows a group of New York Broadway actors who were inspired to help the youth of New Orleans. Together, they stage a musical theatre production of the Ahrens & Flaherty Broadway musical Once On This Island, with local teenagers at the St. Mark’s Community Center located at the edge of the French Quarter. The film follows the crew and the children from auditions through to performances and includes the story of each young actor’s life in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The story of the musical is similarly reflected in life in New Orleans post Katrina. Michael has produced the ASCAP Foundation Jerry Herman Legacy Program: a series of seminars, master classes and concerts featuring the legendary composer/lyricist. The program has been presented nationwide in such cities as Chicago, Sundance, San Francisco, Savannah, Miami and Pittsburgh. Michael is proud to be a member of the Boards of the American Theatre Wing, the Johnny Mercer Foundation and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Andrew McKinnon is one of Australia’s longest established producers and presenters of fine entertainment. In 2009 Andrew presented the Australian tour of David Hobson and Teddy Tahu Rhodes and the smash hit US premiere of Scotland the Brave at the Lincoln Center, New York. Producers are invited to submit program concepts within the following categories: · A live-action or mixed media program for 4 – 7 year old boys and girls – an unique, unusual, imaginative idea, that will cut through and make an impact in the schedule, and stand alongside the world’s best pre-school programming. · A live action or animated drama and comedy for 8 – 12 year old boys - big, bold, brave ideas that offer our audience something different, that they might only find on ABC. · A comedy/variety Show for 8 – 12 year old boys and girls – fresh, original Australian concepts for comedy and/or variety shows that appeal directly to the target audience’s sense of humour and reflect their own experiences and interests. · A game/quiz Show for 8 – 12 year old boys and girls – an original Australian concept, with challenges that inspire contestants to up the ante, either physically or mentally. Springboard Deadline: 28 September 2009 Screen Australia today has called for applications for Springboard, a unique development and production opportunity for creative teams to write and produce a short film that acts as a creatively and professionally relevant calling card for their proposed first feature project. Springboard is targeted at filmmaking teams who have a final draft script ready for the marketplace and are one step away from making their first professional feature film. "We are committed to galvanising the connection between short filmmaking and a feature film career," said Martha Coleman, Head of Development at Screen Australia. "A team's short films are vitally important in raising marketplace interest in their first feature film. Springboard will provide an essential stepping-stone in a professional filmmaking career path. It is about career building for the long term." Springboard is aimed at outstanding aspiring filmmakers with a demonstrable commitment to a professional feature film career. Six teams will be selected to take part in two high-level workshops to develop and hone a short film proposal from scratch. Following these stages, Screen Australia will select the three most promising short film projects to go into production, with a budget of up to $120 000 each. Screen Australia will continue to support the teams on completion of their short film, including providing festival strategy advice to assist the short in being showcased at national and international festivals. The Springboard workshops will be run by Simon van der Borgh and Jonathan Rawlinson, screenwriting teachers and script consultants with extensive international experience. Simon and Jonathan have previously designed and delivered film training programs for the UK Film Council, the European Union's MEDIA Programme, the British Council, the Fulbright Commission and screen agencies in the UK, Europe and Australia. Shorts Production program Deadline: Animation Production 30 October 2010 As well as Springboard, Screen Australia's support for short films includes its Short Animation Production program, and a new Shorts Completion Fund that provides finance for distinctive shorts that show outstanding potential but lack the funds to finish. Screen Australia also supports the Raw Nerve initiative, which provides opportunities to new filmmakers to create short films in collaboration with the Screen Development Australia (SDA) network. Deadline: 5 October 2009 ABC Children’s Television has announced a new initiative to be held at the SPAA Conference with up to $30,000 in development funding available. SPAA Conference will be held from 17 to 19 November at the Westin Hotel in Sydney. Australian producers are invited to submit a brief concept document for a game/quiz show suitable for commissioning as a long-running, low-cost series on ABC3, the new digital free-to-air children’s TV channel. The project is aimed at an audience of kids aged 8 to 12 years. The ABC will select four finalists who will be invited to a private pitch during the SPAA Conference with the winner to be awarded a guaranteed prize of $5 000. At the ABC’s discretion a further development funding and a pilot deal of up to $25 000 may be offered. The project must be an original Australian concept and feature Australian kids. It must appeal to the 8 – 12 year old demographic and have a clear winner (group or individual) and not judged by opinion. The ABC is looking for a project that can be produced in high volume at low cost and suitable for playing on-line as well as watching on-air. Applicants are invited to submit a proposal of more than five pages in length. Flickerfest entry deadline extended Late Entries Deadline: 11 September 2009 Due to an overwhelming number of enquiries to the Flickerfest office the deadline for Australian entries to Flickerfest 2010 has been extended to the same deadline as International entries.
