Changing Media Landscape Seminar with David Gurney
The Changing Media Landscape Seminar with David Gurney of Blue Rocket Production is a 2.5 hour seminar that gives an overview of the dynamic changes within the industry and the impact upon everyone working in the digital media business. It covers a variety of topics including:
- The transformation of the free-to-air television industry
- IPTV
- Online entertainment and MMORPG’S
- Mobile content
- Developing multiplatform content
- New players on the field
- Future opportunities and challenges
David Gurney is a well known creator of animated cartoons. He created, produced and directed Australia’s first fully 3D animated television series, Hoota & Snoz. The series has sold worldwide into over 100 countries. David is a prolific developer of cartoon characters and concepts and with his partner Alicia Rackett, runs Blue Rocket Productions, an award winning cartoon studio based in Hobart.

Frame x Frame A Cinematography Masterclass with Jan Kenny
There are many creative choices that are made when shooting a film that can change or effect the overall telling of the story. The ‘Frame x Frame’ seminar will consist of the screening and review of selected scenes from the films Road to Perdition (DOP - Conrad Hall ASC, Director - Sam Mendes) and The Conformist (DOP -Vittoria Storaro, Director - Bernardo Bertolucci).
Participants will be invited to get involved in the discussion and explore the creative visual choices that were made in the films, and discuss their relevance to the overall storytelling.
Please note: There will be screening The Conformist in Hobart on Tuesday morning from 10.00am 12.00pm at the same venue. It would be helpful for the participants to have viewed both these films prior to the session, however, it is not essential or a prerequisite to attending the session. The Road to Perdition should be available at most video libraries.

About the Presenter - Jan Kenny, Head of Cinematography, AFTRS
Jan Kenny has worked in the film industry since 1967, and became a cinematographer in 1976. Jan is a pioneer for female cinematographers in Australia, with a number of firsts to her name. She was the first woman in Australia to work on a feature film as part of the camera crew. Later, with Fran starring Noni Hazelhurst, she became the first woman in Australia to shoot a feature film. In 1986, Jan became the first woman to be accredited by the Australian Cinematographers Society and in 2004, was the first woman inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame.

The Art of Creative Editing with Bill Russo (Launceston Only)
Most editors will tell you that they work intuitively. This seminar will show you how to go beyond just feeling your way as an editor to reveal what it takes to be a successful editor.
By the end of this course participants will have had the opportunity to:
- Discover how editing can dramatically influence an audience's emotional response and change meaning in a story
- Examine the creative contribution of editing
- Explore the development of editing styles and examine good, bad and mediocre editing by analysing film clips
- Investigate the role of sound editing and its contribution to the storytelling process in filmmaking.

Bill Russo has been an editor for more than 30 years, spending a substantial part of that time with the ABC. The vast majority of the projects Bill has edited have been film-based dramas and documentaries including the award winning Blue Murder, Scales of Justice, Edens Lost, Wildside, Come in Spinner, Two Friends, Frontier, Police Rescue, See How They Run, Police State, and Joh's Jury.

Australian Directors Guild Conference
The Australian Directors Guild Conference will be held at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, Moore Park, Sydney from 25 29 September 2008 in conjunction with the Australian Directors Guild Awards to be held on 27 September 2008.
The ADG Conference is a premier four day event aimed at directors working across drama and documentary sectors. Conference delegates will also include producers, screenwriters, representatives from government funding agencies, film and television students and other industry professionals. The program will be a mix of plenary sessions, informative workshops and master classes, providing delegates with a substantial opportunity to advance their professional development and education.

Screen Development Australia Pitch
Wide Angle Tasmania is proud to present the Tasmanian section of the Screen Development Australia (SDA) National Pitch.
The SDA Pitch will be split into sections. The first part will involve a free seminar for anyone interested in learning how to make their pitch as good as it can be. This session will prepare you for the following competition day where you can make your pitch to a panel of industry experts.
The winning pitch entitles you to flights, accommodation and registration at SPAA Fringe 24 25 October in Sydney, where you will re-present your pitch to another industry panel.

SPAA Conference Nickelodeon's Land a Pilot returns in 2008

SPAA Conference 2008 welcomes the return of Nickelodeon's Land a Pilot initiative. Nickelodeon Australia has increased the funding offer to $25,000 towards the production of a children's television pilot. The finalists will pitch at the Conference on Thursday 13 November with the winner announced on the day at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast.
Nickelodeon is looking for a series concept that appeals to the highly competitive pre-teen 10-12 year demographic. It can be animated or live action, comedy or drama, reality or game show. A program that both challenges and connects emotionally with their audience; reflecting Nickelodeon's irreverent sense of humour with a look and feel that is original and surprising.

MIFF Travelling Film Festival Devonport
The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) will hit the road to visit Devonport’s CMAX Cinemas for a three-day special event from 29 August to 31 August.
Back by popular demand, the Travelling Film Festival Devonport will feature some MIFF 2008 highlights, surprises, special guests and more.
The documentary by Tasmanian Scott Millwood is the Opening Night film for the Travelling Film Festival (TFF) Devonport. Investigating the disappearance of Tasmanian Environmentalist Brenda Hean in 1972, whose light plane disappeared while en route to Canberra, where she planned to petition the prime minister to save Tasmania’s Lake Pedder from a massive hydro-electricity scheme.
The battle for the lake was lost, the plane never found, and a public enquiry was never conducted despite evidence suggesting sabotage…

FLICKERFEST 2009 Call for Entries

Flickerfest is delighted to announce that they are now accepting entries from Australia and around the world. Flickerfest will screen for 10 days at Bondi Beach in January 2009 before heading off on a national tour. The Festival consists of three competitive programs - International, Australian and Documentary as well as a number of special programs and forums out of competition.
The FLICKERFEST International competition is open to any production available for screening on 35mm. BETACAM IS ALSO ACCEPTABLE FOR THE DOCUMENTARY AND AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION. All films must be under 30 minutes and must have been completed within 2 years of the closing date. Films must be in English or have English subtitles. Due to the competitive nature of the Festival, we favour Sydney premieres and films that have not been broadcast or made available for download in Australia.
Flickerfest is Australia’s only ®Academy Award accredited Short Film festival, and its largest short film competition.

INSITE Competition for Unproduced Feature Screenplays Open for Entries

The Australian Writers' Guild (AWG) and the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) are calling for entries to the fourth biennial INSITE.
The winning screenplay will receive a rehearsed public reading during the National Screenwriters’ Conference, to be held in conjunction with the 2009 Adelaide Film Festival 2009. The winning writer will receive travel to Adelaide to participate in rehearsals and a cash prize of $2,500. A shortlist of screenplays will also be sent to a number of Australian producers and distribution companies.
Entry to INSITE 2009 is open to all financial members of the AWG. New members are encouraged to enter with reduced joining fees available for INSITE entrants.

Raw Nerve Screening and Seminar

Digital Fringe Festival Calling for short art or experimental films

The Digital Fringe Festival is calling for short art or experimental films you would like to see screened at the Tasmanian leg of the tour (Alley Cat Bar in the south and a venue yet to be determined in the north).
In keeping with the Fringe Festival charter Digital Fringe is accessible to emerging and established artists, particularly those working in new media. It provides access to public screens and sets up novel environments for artists to exhibit their work.
Those interested in providing films for the festival must deliver them to Wide Angle Tasmania at Space 123, Salamanca Arts Centre, 77 Salamanca Place, Hobart TAS 7004 by 12.00 pm Friday, 19 September 2008. All films submitted will be considered for inclusion in the Victorian screenings.
