Screen Tasmania recognises the importance of storytelling to Australia’s cultural life and seeks to foster Tasmanian talent by supporting projects that offer unique stories and demonstrate a bold creative vision.

Applications can be made to a number of funds designed to support the development of projects in a number of genres, for small screens or large, and at different stages of writing:

Projects and applicants must satisfy a number of other eligibility criteria before submitting an application, which must include a completed Project Development Fund application form relevant to each fund, available in Word format.  Applicants should also read the Screen Tasmania General Guidelines and Terms of Trade, both available in pdf format.

3.1 Television Development Fund

This fund recognises the potential of television series to contribute to industry sustainability, and is designed to encourage the development of outstanding projects that demonstrate strong market appeal and a high likelihood of advancing into production.

Funding is available for well-developed television series projects intended to be produced in Tasmania in the following categories:

  • children’s and adults’ animation
  • drama
  • documentary
  • comedy

3.2 Documentary Signature Fund

Screen Tasmania recognises the importance of documentary storytelling to Australia’s cultural life and seeks to foster Tasmanian talent by supporting projects that offer unique stories and demonstrate a bold creative vision.

This fund aims to provide filmmakers with the freedom to develop distinctive, one-off documentary film projects independently, with the aim of attracting broadcaster interest or Screen Australia Signature funds.

Single documentary films of any style or genre are eligible, including observational, docu-drama, essay, investigative, biopic and narrative driven. Projects can encompass any topic or subject matter.

Applicants must demonstrate a bold and original creative vision in relation to genre, subject and format, and the project must be well-researched with clearly defined intentions and target audience.

3.3 Feature Film Fund

This fund recognises the creative and cultural value of developing outstanding Australian drama that has the potential to engage a wide audience both nationally and internationally.

Support is available for the development of feature film or telemovie scripts at treatment and draft stage. In addition to financial support, Screen Tasmania provides a tailored project support service, designed to assist practitioners to advance their project into production.

Funding is available for the following commercially strong, original projects intended to be filmed in Tasmania:

  • feature length projects
  • all genres including drama, comedy and documentary
  • original works, or adaptations from existing works where the applicant has control of the copyright

3.4 New Writers Fund

This fund recognises that the creation of quality screen content requires well-crafted scripts to realise the full potential of bold, original ideas. Screen Tasmania aims to identify and foster new talent by matching entry level and emerging writers with professional story developers to assist in the creation of new work.

New writers can apply to work under the guidance of an experienced script professional who will guide them through the process of developing new and commercially strong, original and quality feature film and television scripts.

Applicants must have completed an original feature length film, telemovie or fictional television script to at least first draft stage, which they intend to be shot in Tasmania.
