Previous Special Initiatives - HeadlandsHeadlands is an intensive 10 week documentary research and writing development initiative from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) through its Documentary Department in partnership with Screen Tasmania and other state and federal agencies. The program focuses on supporting selected applicants through the intensive process of research and development of a high concept documentary feature, series, multi-media or one-off program that requires extensive research. Individual applicants or teams of two may apply. Headlands involves 10-weeks of research, writing, conversation and collaboration which aims to invigorate Australian documentary research and production and aid its success in local and international markets. Through a series of master classes, group and individual sessions with workshop leaders, and other leading documentary filmmakers, Headlands intends to stretch thinking about the form, content and potential of documentary production in Australia. For the first week the residential workshop will be led by artistic director, John Hughes, alongside one high-profile international documentary filmmaker working with acclaimed Australian advisors. Headlands is aimed at experienced practitioners with ambitious projects that engage with complex ideas and open up fascinating research areas to a broad audience by skilful use of documentary storytelling. While participants will be chosen on the basis of the strength of the ideas behind their proposed project, these projects and ideas will be transformed and extended as research and storytelling possibilities are explored in workshops, one-on-one mentoring, and brainstorming sessions throughout the period of the hothouse.
